How Chiropracty and Yoga Complement Each Other

I was recently hired to teach yoga at a local chiropractic office, which also offers acupuncture and massage therapy. This office has a unique approach to chiropracty that integrates a variety of techniques in a holistic environment. A few years ago, I was being treated by a chiropractor for a neck injury. The treatment I received dramatically reduced my level of pain and increased my mobility. At that time I practiced yoga a couple of times a week, but my chiropractor instructed me not to do yoga until my neck was healed.

As a yoga teacher, I am aware that injuries can be exacerbated by certain poses. For example, someone with a neck injury should probably not be practicing shoulder stand. I also know doing a pose incorrectly can certainly cause harm.  However, yoga is very therapeutic and has the capacity to heal if guided by a competent teacher.

The idea of combining chiropracty and yoga is a perfect marriage in the right environment. It enables chiropractic patients to improve mobility and functional relationships of the spine and related structures. Yoga also promotes healing by stimulating endocrine and nervous systems as discussed in the article below from the American Chiropractic Association:

I wonder if my neck may have healed faster if I had been treated by a chiropractor with this type of approach?
